The standerd mill in Bourtagne is an almost exact copy of the mill in Ter Haar. It is true that the original, which presumably dates from the 17th century and has only been located in Ter Haar since 1831, stood exactly on this rampart in Bourtagne. Although the mill site is historic, the imitation of the standerd mill is relatively new. It was only in 1980 that the construction could be completed as part of a restoration of the entire fortress, which, in addition to the mill, included the various bastions, a historic market place, officers' houses and wooden bridges.
Together with the mill in Ter Haar, which Until 1969 was used for the production of 'daily bread', but since then it has only served to serve visitors, the building in Bourtagne is the only standerd mill in the province of Groningen. This oldest type of windmill, in contrast to the wind corn mill that is common in this region, has its entire 'body' in the wind.
Today the standerd mill in Bourtagne is owned by the municipality of Vlagtwedde. There are still a couple of millstones for grinding the grain and a millstone for husking barley grains, but they are no longer been in use.
